Rich deciduous forests, especially in moist depressions, seeps, and along streams.

This is a very distinctive plant with peculiar often twisted pale green perigynia conically tapering to the short beak; the terminal spike is quite variable, often in the same clump, in whether or not there is a pistillate apex.
