F. squarrosa of Michigan Flora.

Locally common on sandy-mucky shores, especially where the water level has receded. A disjunct between the Atlantic Coast and the western Great Lakes area, often found growing with other species of similar affinity.

The scales of the spikelets have long outwardly curved awns, which give the spikelets a very characteristic bristly appearance. The achenes are sharply 3-angled, elevated on short stalks.
