Rich, moist deciduous forests, very rare. First collected from the Bankson Lake area, Van Buren Co. (J. A. Nieuwland in 1918, ND) and more recently by R. W. Smith in Lenawee Co.

Plants from the northern part of the range of this variable species are referred to var. versicolor (Nutt.) Fernald.
