Rock crevices and ledges on the Isle Royale archipelago, especially on the Lake Superior shore.

Commonly known by the later name H. appalachiana Beitel & Mickel. On Passage Island, hybrids with H. selago (H. ×josephbeitelii A. Haines) are known, which resemble a lax, robust H. appressa. They are best confirmed by the high percentage of abortive spores.
