Dry to moist sandy fields, and open forests, often along trails, on old roads, and on hummocks; relictual in older forest stands.

Our commonest Sceptridium, highly variable in leaf cutting from merely toothed to lacerate or even essentially skeletonized. Sometimes divided into varieties based on the degree of dissection, but plants in the same population often show virtually the full range of variation.
