Fields, open forests, usually in sandy soils, sometimes associated with limestone rock. 

Stensvold and Farrar (2016) have recently shown that our Michigan plants represent a genetically distinct, uniquely North American entity they have named Botrychium neolunaria, differing in details from the circumpolar B. lunaria, which occurs in North America only at high latitudes.
