Hystrix patula of Michigan Flora.

Usually in rich deciduous or mixed forests and river banks, especially in wet or slightly disturbed areas in beech-maple-hemlock stands; in swamps and sometimes oak-hickory forests; rarely in coniferous swamps. Rare hybrids with E. virginicus occur (E. ×ebingeri G. C. Tucker).
