Rich often moist deciduous and mixed forests, common along trails and clearings; rarely in cedar-hemlock stands.

A very striking plant when seen in the forests, rather strongly glaucous in aspect, with prominent pale ligules. The mature panicle branches are widely spreading or somewhat reflexed as in other large forest understory grasses with which it may be growing, e.g., Melica smithii and Festuca subverticillata.
