Physocarpus opulifolius (L.) Maxim.
Common Name: NINEBARK
Coefficient of Conservatism: 4
Coefficient of Wetness: -3
Wetness Index: FACW
Physiognomy: Nt Shrub

Banks of rivers and streams, shores, often in very calcareous sites; occasionally in swamps or swales farther from borders of water; also on rock outcrops in the northwestern Upper Peninsula. A handsome shrub in flower (resembling a large cultivated Spiraea) or fruit. The pedicels (crowded in a dense umbellate or corymbose raceme) and calyx are usually lightly to heavily pubescent with stellate hairs. The fruit is often somewhat stellate-pubescent also; such plants are found from southern Michigan to Lake Superior and do not seem to warrant varietal recognition.
