Verbena hastata B. S. Walters

Marshes, ditches, wet shores and stream banks; thickets and openings in swamps.

Usually a tall, conspicuous plant with somewhat candelabrum-like inflorescence, but may be as short as 15 cm with a single spike. White-flowered plants have been named f. albiflora Moldenke. Pink- or rose-flowered plants are also known from the state. An apparent hybrid with V. stricta [V. ×rydbergii Moldenke] was collected in 1959 at the George Reserve near Pinckney, Livingston Co. It has the aspect of V. hastata, but slightly larger calyces and corollas and hoary pubescence on the undersides of the leaves.
