Potamogeton berchtoldii Fieber
Common Name: PONDWEED
Coefficient of Conservatism: 4
Coefficient of Wetness: -5
Wetness Index: OBL
Physiognomy: Nt P-Forb

In lakes, bog pools, streams, and rivers, including bays of the Great Lakes; often abundant, usually in shallow water (up to 1.3 m) but sometimes as deep as 4.5 m.

Often treated as Potamogeton pusillus subsp. tenuissimus, but Les et al. (2009) present evidence that it is quite a distinct lineage and give some additional distinguishing characters. Wider and usually obtuse leaved plants with a clear border along the midrib are relatively easy to distinguish from P. pusillus, but narrower leaved plants with little or no border along the midrib need to be identified by the nature of the stipules.
