Borders of diverse forests and roadsides, trails and recent clearings; often in moist ground, even on floodplains and at edges of swamps; fields and disturbed places.

Robust plants, as often seen at recently disturbed roadsides, logged forests, or building sites, may tower over a person and have a massive ± cylindrical inflorescence. Leaf lobing is variable, as in other species in the genus.
