Deciduous forests and borders, thickets, swamps, and often at transitions between upland forests and wetlands.

The leaves of this species and P. alba vary tremendously from unlobed to variously lobed or parted; additional taxa have been segregated for some of the expressions of leaf shape, but are not recognized here.
