Outcrops of non-calcareous rocks, often in partial sun; very local.

Michigan plants are subsp. parvulum Sarvela, which is sometimes recognized at the rank of species as Gymnocarpium continentale (Petrov) Pojark. For hybrids see Gymnocarpium dryopteris.
