Dry, sandy ground; first collected by Zina Pitcher, presumably in 1829, at Fort Gratiot (Port Huron, St. Clair Co.), more recently collected in disturbed sites in the northern Lower and Upper Peninsula. Native in North America, but possibly these recent collections represent new introductions. See Cusick (2002) for a discussion.
