A native of the Rocky Mountain region, occasionally found eastward as presumably an introduction. Collected in 1949 as a weed along the edge of a cultivated field south of Houghton, Houghton Co.

The pedicels are also sometimes recurved in R. palustris var. fernaldiana, which is also glabrous, but which has fruit broader and often longer than in R. curvipes and less tapered to the tip.
