Limestone pavement (alvar); very local. Similar to C. nutans, but usually smaller.

In C. brachypodum, the pedicels, at least of the lowest flowers, are often ± reflexed from the base, while in C. nutans, the pedicels are usually erect to spreading, with a bend at the apex producing the nodding capsule.
