Marshes, swales, ditches, bog and fen borders, river and stream banks, alder or tamarack swamps, and similar wet places, often forming extensive colonies.

A few collections have the sheaths unusually hispidulous. One collection from Jackson Co. (mapped as C. subimpressa in Michigan Flora) is very unusual in having the perigynia thinly hispidulous. These rare states are not accommodated in the keys.
