Meadows, shores, dunes, roadsides, ditches, railroad banks, in both wet to dry settings; usually in sun, but persisting in forests and shaded thickets. Very common throughout.
Equisetum ×ferrissii Clute is a very common hybrid of E. hyemale and E. laevigatum occurring in the same habitats as its parents; sandy shores, beaches, dunes, borrow pits, fields, ditches, roadsides and railway embankments, etc.; persisting (like E. hyemale) in forests. See the key.
The hybrid Equisetum ×mackayi is discussed under E. variegatum.
