Dry, often open sandy or rocky woods and shores, mostly near Lake Superior; apparently very local.
This species is reported to have usually more than 25 stomata on the upper surface of the leaves while S. annotinum usually has none. Examination of limited Michigan material suggests these differences may hold here.
