Roadsides and railroads, fields, vacant lots and other disturbed places. Collected as early as 1843 by D. Cooley (presumably in Macomb or Oakland Co.) and by the mid-1880’s in Ingham and Keweenaw Cos. Doubtless originally an escape from cultivation, for the species has long been grown for its edible taproot.
As in T. dubius, the phyllaries exceed the ligules and the pedicels are inflated.
