Sandy shores and dunes, including old dune ridges, often with scattered pine, oak, or other trees; especially characteristic along Lake Superior from Whitefish Point to Grand Marais and along Lake Michigan; occasionally inland on sandy shores and plains, again with pines and oaks.
A bushy little shrub, ± white-pubescent, sometimes forming large mats on rather stabilized dunes and beaches. It might be mistaken for a form of juniper, except for the small but copious bright yellow flowers.
